Greetings,

Right off the bat, it looks like you do not have the correct version of PHP installed. I am guessing here, but I believe you have PHP5, instead of PHP4.

Another thing to check into is if you have the PEAR or the individual mysql connectors.

It forgives my lack of knowledge, but as I can verify this?

Your best bet would be to create a small PHP file in your webservers root directory. Call it something like 'test.php' with the following contents;
<?PHP phpinfo(); ?>

Then with a browser, bring up the test.php file. This will tell PHP to display information about itself. This will let you know which version of PHP you are using and what database connectors you have.

I am not sure what you are saying / asking here, but, from my experience, Zabbix works best with PHP4 and the non-mysqli DB package.

I am not sure if this will help, but give it a try; Installation Guide (http://www.zabbix.com/manual/v1.1/install.php). It does list the requirements, and does include a section on the versions of PHP that it supports.
