After downloading and playing around with Zabbix I found out there was _very_ little documentation, especially on Maps. Anyway, I really wanted a map similar to the one displayed in the screenshots. I could not figure this out for the life of me. After searching the forum I saw that you can add a map within a map, however I could not find that item anywhere. First off, create your basic 'network map'. This should contain your various servers, routers, switches, etc... Next, download your 'country' map, I'm attaching the one I am using. Okay, now first of all you need to do some things before uploading your map. Now, let's say you have some servers in the state of Florida, and you want Florida to be 'red' if there are any problems there. Open the map up in a image editor (I used GIMP). Next you want to outline the state (Florida in this example) that you'd like to use. (In GIMP you can use the Fuzzy Selector which will usually select the state you wish rather precisely with just one click) After selecting the state you are choosing, copy it to a new image. Now, first you want to choose how you'd like it to be displayed if everything is fine. Let's assume you don't want any colors, just the default image if its fine then just save this plain image as state-blank.png. Next, you want to show how it will look if there is a problem, (in this example red), so fill the state with the color red and save the image as state-red.png. Next you want to upload the 3 images you should now have. They should be the full map of the country, the state when everything is fine (blank), and the state when there are problems (red). You upload the images through Configuration --> General --> Images --> Create Image . You want to upload the full country as 'background' and the state images as Icon's.
Next create a new map under Configuration-->Maps this is going to be the 'main country' map. I used a default 800x600 for the Background Image select the country image you uploaded. After you save it, go to edit the maps items and coordinates. Click on 'Add Element' Type is 'Map' then select the network map you created where it says 'Map'. Next, for the Icon OFF select the image you wanted to display when there are no problems and for Icon ON select the red image you uploaded that would confirm a problem. Set the coordinates of the state, in this example, Florida is at about 600x400 The URL can remain blank. If all is well you should have the country map with a state that is either blank or red if there is an issue.
** Attached are my sample Florida blank and Florida red. Here is the link to the full USA map I used...I changed it from a jpeg to a png but here is the jpeg http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/unite.../usa_blank.jpg
