How to check if a VPS/Linux server is alive

Hi

We would like to check if our VPS's / Linux servers are alive
We would like to use curl / netcat for this test

There is no agent installed on the servers.

How can we do it?
Any document about it?

Has anyone Managed to get Zabbix to work with SolusVM in any of the following ways:

• Monitor a VM status via SolusVM API
• Get Statistics via SolusVM API
• Shutdown/Boot/Reboot a Virtual Server on SolusVM

If someone has, I'm curious how you implemented this....
