if you are playing with development versions (1.9 branch), but do not want to follow trunk all the time, there's now a solution that should allow you to patch the database between these versions (for example, from 1.9.3 to 1.9.4).
a bit hackish but seemingly working script at http://www.zabbix.org/svn/zabbixorg/..._version_patch allows to generate patches between any two versions (so far only 1.9.2, 1.9.3 and 1.9.4 are on that list
