monitoring vpn tunnel ??

Please could you advise..
I have tried to create an item for monitoring the interface tun0 on our vpn box (fc3), but zabbix won't accept the configuration - it replies not supported ..
all the other interfaces eth0 eth1 and ppp0 all work fine.
I need to be able to show the traffic over the tunnel ... so how do I get it to work ?
