ICMPPING false positive and no email sent via triggers

I've been using nagios, but was looking for something that was more user friendly and stored to a database so Zabbix was a recommended alternative.

I started with a fresh CentOS 6.0 VM and installed zabbix, zabbix-agent, zabbix-server-mysql and zabbix-web-mysql via Yum and the EPEL repo.

Once zabbix was up and running I went to Profile, added email media with timeframe 1-7,00:00-23:59; to an external gmail address.

I then went to Admin | Media Types and edited the email type to the following

    SMTP Server: localhost
    SMTP HELO: [email protected]
    SMTP email: [email protected]

Next I created a template, that had two items an ICMPPING and a SSH item, both simple checks. For ICMP ping I've tried adding the key as both 'icmpping' and 'icmpping[{IPADDRESS}] both with the same results. I've attached screenshots of both the ICMP and SSH items as well as the.

When I look at the dashboard I see a warning that the server is unreachable to an icmp ping. However when I try and ping the server via ssh it works fine

    [root@noc zabbix]# fping boromir
    boromir is alive

When I check the zabbix_server.log there's nothing amiss I can find there either.

Yet the dashboard seems to think the server is unreachable and even though there are triggers setup, no email was sent. I've checked the zabbix server logs, the maillog and the messages log and there's no record of the system trying to send an email, yet I can email from the command line ok, so I know the MTA is setup.

I'd really like to do away with Nagios.. could this be a problem with the zabbix install, or can anyone point me in a direction to resolve this?
