Monitor Interface over VPN or Internet

I am extremely new to Zabbix and fairly new to SNMP. I've been playing around with it and googling for 2 days straight and can't quite find a clear answer.

I customized a template to monitor Palo Alto firewall interfaces. I was originally going to monitor a this firewall (using ifOperStatus item) over an IPsec VPN tunnel (with a trigger I couldn't get to work). The intent is to get a notification via email or text if the WAN interface goes down or in other words if the tunnel goes down. I realized that if the WAN interface goes down it probably won't matter because SNMP can't get to it.

So my question is, what is the best way to monitor this remote firewall? I'd like to know if the WAN interface goes down because, of course, this will bring the VPN tunnel down.

Is there some way to have Zabbix ping the WAN interface occasionally and notify me of a certain number of missing pings or something like that? If this is possible does it even require SNMP to be enabled?

Any suggestions or help is welcome.
