Zabbix Server versions 1.8.8 and 1.8.10 (multiple sites)

Hi All,
We had a database crash last night and it sent out emails every 15 minutes. Is this email frequency configurable, in some configuration file or database table, or is it hard-coded? My research turned up nothing besides the fact that the email content itself is hard-coded.
