Monitoring a VIP for service

Hey all I want to setup some very simple checks for SLA and I am having a bit of trouble with getting them configured. I have setup a template with a new item in it that uses the simple approach nntp_perf and for some reason this doesn't work. I was under the impression that for a simple check like this there was no need to have an agent on the remote host is this not the case or have I just configured things wrong on my end?
