IPv6 and IPv4 ICMP monitoring of a host.

I would like to know how you monitor availability via ping on a host (via DNS/FQDN) in both IPv6 and IPv4. I tried using -4 and -6 in icmpping and it didn't work. Any suggestions?
Scenario: The host is configured with an interface using a DNS name (dns.google for example).
Objective: Find out when the host stops responding to only one of the protocols (only IPv6 or only IPv4).
