VMware FQDN monitoring issue after VCenter upgrade

We had to upgrade our VCenter due to a security vulnerability and ever since the VMware related metrics have stopped being collected. If you restart the zabbix server if it will collect some items for a brief time but then stop. I see alot of entries like this in the server log:

<VM metric info...>became not supported: Unknown virtual machine uuid

Agent based hosts and items continue to report as expected. What is also interesting is the zabbix server health items also stop reporting.
After this issue began I upgraded zabbix to the latest LTS release 7.0.6 but that didn't fix anything. We were on 7.0.3.

    VCenter info:

    Version: 7.0.3
    Build: 24322018
    Clusters: 5
    Hosts: 36
    Virtual Machines: 814

We are using the VMware FQDN template which I thought was supposed to mitigate issues like this? Am I mistaken?

Ideas on how to fix our issue? What other information may I provide?
