Actions for problems that arise during maintenance

I am having trouble with getting notifications for problems that arise during a maintenance period, but continue after the period ends.

In detail:

1. Maintenance period starts.
2. Problem arises - trigger fires, but no action because we are in maintenance mode. All well and good, we are in maintenance so expect problems and don't report on them.
3. Maintenance period ends.
4. Problem still exists, but action never happens so I don't get notified.

Is there anything I can do about this?
