VMware 6.0 - powered on vms

I need to monitor a higly volatile VM environment (a lot of machines powered on/powered off during the day).
There is a way to monitor the number of powered on machines , better if on a esxi basis ?
there is an existing metric , or I must use one external script with powercli ?
