Instead of putting the mute button on alerts, can you put the mute button on the dashboard? It makes more sense to be able to turn it on or off at leisure, rather than only when there is an alert.
Also, a mute timer might be appropriate. So mute indefinately, but if someone enters a number of minutes, mute that many minutes then unmute.
