why 86400 as an interval limit for items ?

I wondered why there is a time limit in the item periodicity ? This is set to 86400 and this is an issue in some cases :
1- things that are monitored but do not change a lot
2- verification of backup and virus DB
For exemple a backup occurs every 24hours but can be delayed for 1 to 10 minutes
. This delay cause an alert 'file has not changed' since 24h. I would like to let it go to 24h+1h to make less false positive.
Is there an internal logic for this limit ? How can we overcome it short of going by hand in the db ?
