The 1.4 documentation PDF incorrectly(?) lists the simple check key syntax like this:
ftp_perf,<ip>,<port>
I entered an <ip> following this format, and my check did not work. It seems that this is an obsolete syntax, and the host is determined by the host your item is created under.
Also, for performance checks, it seems that you need to specify Float for the data type, not Integer.
I didn't get a meaningful error message to either error, spent over an hour trying to figure out what was wrong!
