Performance on 1.6

We are currently installing 1.6.1. On our 1.6 system we see regular peaks which might cause a lot of delays in the queues. My question is: what causes these regular peaks on the MySQL db? Is it the housekeeper running every hour? The load on the machine seems to be related directly to it...
