We seem to be having better luck with discoveries of auto-registered hosts (sounds oxymoronic, huh.) than via network discovery.
Currently I am attempting to assign a template based upon hostname or operating system of the system the agent lives on, but with auto registration, the filter seems to list name or proxy only.
Example: new linux or windows box has an agent installed, when it speaks to zabbix server, i'd like for it to assign OS templates as well as machine-function (web, database, etc) templates.
We can easily do that via discovery, even if it is dog slow (5min polling time, hosts barely show up in zabbix server log and only sometimes will be discovered), yet with auto-registration which is quite fast, it seems limited.
