    Home network bandwidth

I'd like to know how bandwidth works on a home network. For example, if I'm using the internet and I'm also transferring files through the home network, does that effect the overall speed of the internet and vice versa? And how important is a router when it comes to (wired) home network?

I currently have an old repurposed PC(C2D 3.16 gb, 8 GB ram) running Ubuntu to share and stream video files through LAN. While it works well enough most of the time, there are moments of "clogging up" and I'm wondering if it's a bottleneck issue with the router, PC, or just the limitation of the setup in general.
