В логах ZABBIX 1.4.6, а говорите что у вас Zabbix 1.8

Вы думаете так и должно быть?
База данных не соответствует вашей версии забикса, раз отсутствуют колонки. Что то вы тут не договариваете.

У меня такая же ошибка, причём как раз на версии 1.8 И вроде бы как я понял, колонки для забикса в базе формирует скрипт... Объясните в чём тут дело?

1. Ошибка после обновления с версии 1.6 на 1.8 ?
2. какое значение стоит в NodeID в zabbix_server.conf ?
3. Используется ли распределенный мониторинг ? (то есть несколько зависимых серверов)

попробуйте выполнить приложенный файл mysql.sql как вам советовали
shell> mysql -u<username> -p<password>
mysql> drop database zabbix;

mysql> quit;

и потом
shell> cd ../data

shell> cd ../data - На вот этом шаге сообщает на отсутствие каталога data. Нашёл вручную этот файл, выполняю- сервер уходит в долгую задумчивость на минут 20, потом отпустило, далее делаю cat на images_mysql.sql отрабатывает быстро, стартую zabbix-server проблема осталась

Почему не должен? Фиг его знает как там в скрипте организовано создание столбцов в таблице, ведь так?

Нет, это говорит что нет значений, но поле есть.
Проверьте еще раз на что ругается заббикс в логах
