    Ready made Zabbix beginners course

    Hello everyone,

I recently gave a Zabbix workshop in the Netherlands where attendees could get their first taste of Zabbix.
I've decided to make the slides and working material available under a Creative Commons License.

The workshop consisted of a (short) talk explaining the basics and a couple of lab excercises that had to be performed on a set of virtual servers. The lab is setup with a pfSense firewall, a Zabbix server and 10 client servers.

If you are looking for an introduction course to get your first Zabbix experience or if you want to give a basic training to help your colleagues understand Zabbix, please feel free to use my materials.

    Lab Guide

We also put up the lab for download. If you just want to do the lab excercises yourself, you only need the first file.

pFSense Firewall, Zabbix server, 1 client machine (1.1GB):

    MD5: 9bfff0473898a339aacdb92d659872b7

    9 client machines (4.1GB):

    MD5: c2070090474e9d75a853fe917f6c11a3

Have fun teaching and/or learning Zabbix! If you want the original ODT files for the slides/lab excercices so you can edit them, drop me a PM and I will send them to you.
I am also very interested in experience you have with the materials, so please feel free to share those too!

Remyzero in #zabbix pointed out to me that the VM files were corrupted.
I rebuilded and reuploaded them now.
I've also provided the md5 hashes for your convenience.

If there are any issues, please let me know
      With kind regards,

              Zabbix frontend guide

Inspired by qix work and the need to education my colleges in the zabbix frontend / GUI, I have done a small presentation – zabbix frontend guide. Mostly screen dumps etc. to make a base for my lessons, but maybe someone else can use it. Sorry for my Danish-English

Later I will provide the “source files” in ODT and/or powerpoint format, but I need some quality check now.
See you at the zabbix conferance

Well have not done any quality check yet, but here you have the source of the presentations, sorry for the delay.

Hello! I'm trying to teach me about zabbix. When I try to set up the servers, I get problems. I am using VMware, and trying to create guest who works there. I have used two different methods:

                  ovftool.exe --datastore=LOCALDISK01 pfsense.ovf vi://192.168.1.3
Error: OVF Package is not supported by target:
                  - Line 25: Unsupported hardware family 'virtualbox-2.2'.
                  Completed with errors

                  ovftool.exe pfsense.ovf pfsense.vmx
Error: OVF Package is not supported by target:
                  - Line 25: Unsupported hardware family 'virtualbox-2.2'.

                  I am grateful for suggestions.

                    HI Johan,

Great that you are giving the course a try!
Unfortunately I haven't prepared the VM's for use with vmware.
They should work perfectly fine with VirtualBox though.

When 2.0 has been released I'll put in some effort to setup a new lab, I'll test those machines with VMWare too.

                    Have fun trying the course!
                    With kind regards,

                    Raymond

It gives me a good reason to try VirtualBox.

                      thank you! //Johan

                        Thank you

This lab has been very helpful in learning how Zabbix works and building scripts to manage the backend mySQL database without affecting production instances here at work.

All testing is done in the virtualized environment provided via these labs... Thank you very much!!!

                          Trigger Help

I am trying to learn how to create zabbix triggers and I am using the tutorial.

I amusing virtual box and the supplied Lab machines.

When adding the trigger during the lesson I have entered all information as shown but when I click on save I get the following error.

Incorrect trigger expression. Host "zbx-deb30" does not exist or you have no access to this host.

Thanks in advance and many thanks for supplying the tutorial

                            Hi ballscout,

Thanks for using the course, I hope it will teach you a great deal about Zabbix

Did you in fact add the host zbx-deb30 like mentioned in the first task?
Without the host created in task 1 and the item created in task 2, the trigger task can not be completed.

                            Please let me know!

                            Regards,

                              Raymond,

I sure did and it is showing in the frontend as available and monitoring.

I had no issue creating the item prior to attempting to creat the trigger.

Actually recreated the item and trigger from the lesson to a production Zabbix server here at work with no issue
