cool way to integrate sensors into zabbix

I'm using owfs to integrate 1-wire temperature sensors into a comprehensive system to monitor a fleet of HVAC systems for my lab, datacenter, power plant and IT server room. Very cool!

Owfs creates a directory tree populated with files containing the variables from my 1-wire network. It was going to cost $2500 to monitor a couple dozen temperature points using an SNMP based temperature sensor system, but by choosing 1-wire and owfs, I have the sensor cost down below $100 for 2 dozen sensors.

To integrate with zabbix, I only have to tell zabbix to read the appropriate temperature file for the particular probe I'm monitoring.

I'm also using the ibuttonlink.com LinkHub-e 1-wire hub to allow me to combine 4 different 1-wire busses into one network. Each network segment can be up to 1000 feet long, and the number of sensors I can support is inversely proportional to the length of the network. Each device reduces the maximum length of the network by about half a meter.

1-wire has changed the way I think about building sensor networks. Owfs has simplified the process of integrating 1-wire designs into working applications. Add that to my favorite network management system, Zabbix... It doesn't get much better than that!

    Georgew, this sounds awesome!

Can you explain some more abou the hardware that is needed to pull this off?
I've had a look at the ibutton website, but it's a litle overwhelming

I guess you need some kind of control device for your bus and then you just plug in the sensors?
    With kind regards,

    Raymond

Q1x, when I first saw Georgew's post and other discussions I found it quite interesting. Here are some links to some resources which will help educate.

The makers of the Dallas Semiconductor DS-XXX 1-Wire temperature sensors. This site contains the technical information about the various sensors and 1-Wire devices.

They make products for the end user centered around 1-Wire.

The One Wire File System project site.
At the top is a menu for hardware, the various submenus and subsequent pages show the various devices supported by OWFS. I have found this a great way to look up vendors of various 1-Wire products.

Georgew, are you using one continuous length sensors with each node soldered in or are you using connectors such as RJ45 to create each segment? I have always wondered about how much of an effect each RJ-45 connector would have with regards to impedance mismatch and signal reflection. Also are you using the sequence detect features on the PIO pins to detect the device order? If so how well have you found this to work?

I'm willing to bet the Emmerson device has a higher overall cost.
