Have been working on a similar project for some time, although mine is based on Python and the recent official pyVmomi VMware vSphere bindings
Initially started the project as a way to provide VMware monitoring support for Zabbix, but eventually ended up with a general purpose distributed poller system for VMware vSphere objects.
