Sorry for necroing the thread, but I could use some help here.

I've trying to find information about ECOM and its installation, and it's kind of hard.

Is ECOM part of SMI-S? If I install it on a VM (say following the guide here: http://www.sentrysoftware.com/kb/KB1050.asp) will that be enough?

Any help appreciated.

ECOM is a component of the SMI-S provider. The doc you linked is *really* old, I'd highly recommend just deploying the SMI-S Appliance if you're in a VMWare shop. It wraps the whole thing up into a single VM and has a nice GUI for managing the array connections.

I would grab the latest from there (4.6.2.29 for VNX) and install. Note that the 8.x version doesn't support VNX and is primarily for VMAX/Symmetrix.

If you aren't running VMWare and you're doing the installation directly on a Windows or Linux VM, the documentation is located there too.
