Any word on how this will get implemented into future releases?

As far as I can see, it has been removed from the roadmap for the 1.8 release: http://www.zabbix.com/next.php - I'm pretty sure it was there before.
I guess that means there aren't any plans for implementing it as it is right now, or that the developers haven't settled on a solution so far.
