Reason for switching to new protocol?

what was the reason fro switching to a new XML based protocol?

This is because of limitation of the old protocol. For example, it used ':' as a field separator. It caused problems when returned value (piece of log file) has this character. New XML protocol will be more flexible and free of any limitations.

The new protocol is already used by 1.1alpha11. Old protocol is supported as well.
