How to get around the new template system??

I have read some that others have been having the same problem with templates and how to have multiple ones attached to servers.
My only way out of this situation is to have a long list of templates linked many many times.
I.e. Host.MySQL, Host.Oracle, Host.MSSQL, Host.Apache, etc.
I will create a single template for each host I have, then link everything to the single host template. I still cannot understand why it has been designed like this, but apparently the old way was too complicated for some.
Has anyone thought of a better way of getting around the new template implementation?
