    reinstalling zabbix.....

Because I'm experiencing constant crashes ever since I upgraded to 1.9.x I want to reinstall Zabbix 1.9.7 again.
Maybe I'm even going back to 1.8.8

The only reason I migrated to 1.9.x were the improved handling of "zabbix external" and the ability to show a few more internal macros in the trigger messages...

Maybe a clean install of the database, templates and hosts will show a better behaviour.

I would export the hosts and the templates, create the database from scratch and then import the hosts and templates again.

The problem is that I can't export the templates and hosts anymore.
I know the software is beta, but this situation forces me to stick with the version I'm having. I don't understand why (in light of the rest of the work you are all doing) it is that hard to just collect the items and put them in xml.

It's not disrespect in any way. I really don't understand why it is so difficult as you are doing other stuff which seem to be more difficult to solve.

The export function is not crashing or anything, it just doesn't create the items.

import/export is not working because several very internal things have changed - especially the multiple-interfaces-per-host thing, but there are several other significant changes.

as for trunk crashing... i'd suggest solving that first
it's not that easy to do a debugging session over forum, so if you'd join #zabbix on freenode, somebody might be able to help. just make sure to wait in there, as people might be sleeping, working or whatnot

I was used to 1.9.6 crashing, but it turned out that 1.9.7 was again stable.

The reason for the many restarts was the watchdog itself which I made too sensitive. I watched the amount of connections and if for some reason there were no connections I would let it make a restart (stop and start).
A bad idea as it turned out.

I've made the watchdog simple again and now all is fine.

      Code:
      netstat -lntp | grep -q zabbix_server || /etc/init.d/zabbix-server start
It's now running for more than 24 hours without any restart

      Code:
      # grep -i starting /var/log/zabbix-server/zabbix_server.log
28596:20111117:130801.289 Starting Zabbix Server. Zabbix 1.9.7 (revision 22741).
I'm still experiencing some gaps in some graphs, but that may be connection issues.

that's great - means we don't have any unknown crash bugs anymore in trunk
