    Newbie on multiplier

    Hi all,
    So far, using Zabbix'es agent, life is so beautiful.
    But, then a question arised, what about device that cannot be used with agents? I search the forum and found 'SNMP_template'. Ok fair enough.

    Then I try to monitor my Centos server using SNMP. After some diggings in the forum and the wiki, I manage to 'monitor' my Linux server network traffic using SNMP.

    What confuses me is:
    1. The graph from Zabbix agent and pure-snmp template gives a similar pattern.
    2. But the numbers are way different.

    I suspect that this has to do with multiplier?

    I dig again, and found that sometimes we need to use '0.125' to 'divide the result by 8', and sometimes '0.1' to divide by 10. And in the wiki, it says that we must use '8' so that it will be multiple by 8.

    I don't understand. What numbers and when to use them in certain OID? Is there any reference tables for this? Especially for the network traffic, what multiplier should I use?

    Thank you very much for all help.

    Can anybody help me here?

    For example, the result of snmpwalk -v 1 localhost -c public gives this result:
    Code:
    IF-MIB::ifInOctets.4 = Counter32: 597461
    IF-MIB::ifOutOctets.4 = Counter32: 1059492
    What multiplier should I use?
    Please...

      Hrrm. I see your confusion. You found this posting right?

      I don't actually use SNMP, but let me dig around and see if I can find something. Meanwhile, you say the patterns are the same but the numbers are off. How far off? Could that be a clue to which multiplier to use? It would make sense that if the numbers were off by a factor of 10, then you should divide by 10.

      Have fun!

        OK, I did a quick search on the forum for SNMP and multiplier. I got a bunch of responses that may be relivant. I don't know a lot about SNMP but it looks like it returns the raw value and it is up to you to format it into the proper number.

        Take a look at this thread: http://www.zabbix.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1504
        It seems to list a bunch of different multipliers and when to use them.

        This one: http://www.zabbix.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8368
        has information about the time stamp with SNMP.

        If you do find out a good listing of when to use multipliers for what data, would you post them to the wiki? I can see where that would be good information to have but like I said before, I don't really have the knowledge to properly discern what is good information on SNMP.

        Hope this helps! Have fun!

          Hello cstackpole,
          Thank you very much indeed on your kind effort. I'll look into it and report the result.
          Frankly speaking. After the post, I then tried opennms and zenoss, but so far I think Zabbix is the most suitable for me in terms of easiness of use and features, and the presentations.
