How do I monitor services on non-standard ports?

Until I have time to look into the possibility of running agents on my firewalls, I need to use simple checks on them. The problem is that I run ssh on a non-standard port on the external interface. I've tried several ways of constructing the checks, but no luck yet. I'm using 1.0.

I'll stop dropping ICMP packets on them until this is solved, but I prefer not to do that long term.

    Thanks

I knew I had to be over analyzing the problem. Between debugging Gentoo init scripts and this I think I fried a circuit. Thanks Gyrate, problem solved!
