how would i sent up an item to do a simple up or down check using say SNMP to send out a query and wait for a response given a few seconds no response status down; response status up.

Is ICMP ping not right for what you want to do? What you have to bear in mind is that if the device you are trying to poll is down, Zabbix won't store any value for that item. I think an ICMP check would be better, or if the device can't/won't respond to ICMP, then a simple TCP connect check. -
I've tried ICMP, but with no luck I get a permission denied, all permission/flags, and ownership are set correctly for fping.
From what Ive been reading fping works with debian users, im using redhat/centos.
so unless i'm unclear on a few things or doing something iwrong i have not been able to get fping to work no matter what i do
from the cli fping works correctly under any userComment
