Connection to database lost -> crash

A few days ago someone reconfigured a firewall and the zabbix-server lost the connection to the MySQL server. I configured zabbix so that it has to send me a email if there is a connection problem to the database. But i didn't received a mail. The server crashed.
Can i configure a delay or something similar that it doesn't crash if he lost the connection?

What version are u using ? We have 1.5.4 (yes beta) and when database is down or unreachable ZABBIX send mail to us and didnt crash. And about you logifle ?

Version 1.6.0. The logfile said something like "connection lost" but not more...
