What are "Applications" supposed to do?

    Hi

I've lloked carefully through the 1.6 manual but I cannot find out (a part from an obvious description) what "Applications", in the "Hosts" tab, are supposed to do.
    Any idea?

    Application don't do much.

They just allow you to group items.

You could create a "Memory" application, and attach all memory related items to it. Same with a "MySQL" Application. Then when you go to Monitoring > Latest data, items will be grouped by application (and you can show/hide applications if you're only interested in MySQL items at that moment, for example).

Application can also be a filter when defining Actions (alerts). You could create an Action with filter "Application = MySQL" to notify your DBA. As only items are linked to Applications, I assume that zabbix evaluates what Applications items are in, when a trigger goes on.

Ok thanks for the clarification... maybe the name should be changed to something more appropiate or descriptive. Personally I found "Application" a bit misleading (something like Categories perhaps?)
