    Software compliance

    Hi,

Is it possible to use Zabbix for software compliance reporting? Basically entering a number of licenses for a company, and having an alert fire off when the number of software installs on all agents associated to that client reaches a certain %, along with reporting on the machines which have certain apps etc ?

If there is a way you can get the number of active users on some software then I can't see why you cannot put it into Zabbix. Does the app provide an API or some external means to determine the number of active users? Or is that only available from within the app?

What i mean is that, if we have 20 copies of office 2003 (ie 20 licenses) then are we able to enter the number 20 in to zabbix against "Office 2003" and have it send us an email when we get near that limit so that we know to buy more licenses? Also, would we be able to report on which machines are using those licenses so that we can show the client ?

This doesn't appear to be supported natively in the agent, but if you can make this data available to the agent [as with any other parameter one might want to monitor] then there's no reason why you wouldn't be able to monitor it with Zabbix. If there's a standard way of obtaining this information from Windows, I suppose it might be worth extending the client, as this can be another selling point for Zabbix.

As to how one gets this data into Zabbix? PowerShell might be a place to start, although you could fit my knowledge of scripting on Windows onto a very small postage stamp, and still have room left.
