    [Zabbix 1.6.2] Can't run server

    Hi everyone,

I've got problem running zabbix 1.6.2 on a debian etch host...

I've first install to a 1.4 version to test it, and wanted to run the last release.

so i've tried the upgrade process but can't succed...(always had in the status page "zabbix server is not running..."

So just because I haven't any data I've decided to uninstall the 1.4, to remove any files and db and to restart the install process with the 1.6.

I've followed the install process has describe in the doc, but can't do it!

I reach successfully the install page, success every page, but I allways have the "zabbix server is not running..."

    but when I run
    ps fax |grep zabbix

I can see all my process zabbix_server...

    Any idea? Thanks!

    For more info,

First when i tried to upgrade, the running server seems to be the 1.4

But now, when I do a zabbix_server --version, i've got

    ZABBIX Server (daemon) v1.6.2 (16 January 2009)
    Compilation time: Feb 1 2009 23:32:22

    still no idea for me?

If you're doing debian, check my blog. I think there is a debian install guide. There is also one in the wiki. It may help your problem, but you haven't really provided an error so I have nothing to work with. Let us know.

          Sorry for my late answer.

The problem is that I haven't any error displayed when I install, or when launch the zabbix_server ...
I just get on the web administration in the overview, displayed a big red NO at the line Zabbix server is running:

I do the same install on a fresh debian distro and it works fine...but not this one...here you get my configure command line:

          ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-server --enable-agentd --with-mysql --with-net-snmp --with-libcurl

I saw on your blog that the libcurl package doesn't exist on etch, but I hadn't a configure error! Maybe because it's a specific kernel from my web hosting?

          Thanks

The Web UI checks whether zabbix_server is running or not by looking for its process with something like "ps aux | grep zabbix_server". If you're running an "enhanced-security" kernel with grsec or similar features, only root can see all processes.

Simple users (that includes "zabbix" and "www-data") will only see process running under their UID. So www-data (apache) won't be able to see zabbix' processes (zabbix_server).

Yet everything can still work fine.

Question is: does zabbix_server poll hosts ? That's what matters. :-)

I think grsec can be configured to give specific users permission to list all processes but I'm not familiar with it and usually grsec kernels tend to be removed, I have to admit.

You were right... even if the message indicate the the server was not running, I can see my host...

so thank you for your help...

              And sorry for the post...
