Reception of agentd data without HOST definition?

    Hi All,
Just wondering if there is a way to receive an unknown agents data without the host being configured. The Discovery is not useful as it requires an IP address/range for polling.

What I have is new hosts being inserted into the network and would like them to be added to an UNKNOWN group until config is complete on the Zabbix server when they would be placed into a known group.

    Similar to BigSisiter's auto-add feature.

Also this is useful for dynamic IP hosts that IP address may/will change.

Is it possible at all to receive the agentd data and show it somewhere on Zabbix if the host is not configured yet?

    Cheers,

    Malster

      Hi Malster,

I'm using Server 1.6.1. In my zabbix_server.log I following Messages:
"Send list of active checks to [10.xx.xx.xx] failed: host [SRV-VM-nnnnn-xx] not found" --> which basically means, there is a zabbix agent somewhere in my network, but there is no host defined for it.

U could trigger this message to automatically create the missing host, add it to some "non-productive" hostgroup or whatever, link with your favourite template....!

      Is this what u want???

      greets

      Patrick

        Hi Patrick,
I currently have an agent sending to my server, (which on purpose is not configured), but I get no log entries for it. I know it is sending as I see it on TCPdump at the server. There is nothing in the logs at all to say an agent is trying to send to an unconfigured host. Its almost as if the trapper function is not working as I would expect some log entry somewhere.

To me, and I maybe wrong, the message you show seems like you have a bit of DB corruption, you have active checks configured for a non-configured host. It's saying that it can't send the list of active-checks to complete to the agent, because it does not know where to send them, not that it is receiving a list of active-check-results from an agent? Like I said I could be wrong. Thanks though, I will put all debugs up to maximum and see if I get any log entries..

        Cheers,

        Malster

          Some other ideas ...
You could do some promiscuous monitoring or firewall rules with logging. It does sound like getting the data from the server logs is easiest if that works out.

            Hi Malster,

Sorry, but u are wrong. I have no db corruption or whatsoever!!!

            The thing is:
Agent does ask the server at a regular basis to send him the items he has to monitor. ( Default 60 sec.) So the whole thing is driven by the Agent.
Now I'm aware that i got/get this message in the Zabbix server logfile for Zabbix Version 1.6.1 (at debug level 3) it's possible that these messages are not loged for other Versions ( 1.4.5 did not, 1.5.x did neither!!!)
            What's your version?
