    Newbie question: SNMP

You've got to be kidding me... Are snmpwalk statements really required to monitor SNMP devices? How does zabbix save me time if I have to do this for 200 printers and switches?

What about monitoring port status on a 48-port switch?

There has to be an easier way.

I'm a newbie too. From what I gather, there is no way around the fact that you have to explicitly put in the OID and host that you want to monitor. That being said, as long as you don't have 200 different printers and switches, you can create a template that contains the item which contains the OID that you want to monitor (or several OIDs for that matter). In essence, you just have to find it once with snmpwalk.

that's exactly how you do it. It's kind of a lot of setup work, especially on large installations but it's worth it in the end.

Have a look at the XML template generators.
