ESXi 3.5 (free version) - how to monitor

    Hi,

Is there a way of using Zabbix to monitor Esxi 3.5 (free version of VMWare).

Does anyone know of a template (or does the Linux template) that monitors ESXi. Also, is there any agent that we can use. We are already using an agent for Ubuntu; could we use this version?

It all depends on which ways you are able to monitor the ESXi server. Does it offer SNMP capabilities, or do you have to log into the server in order to get out the numbers?

ESXi does not have a service console like ESX has so you cannot install a ZABBIX agent on ESXi.

ESXi does have SNMP but currently only supports traps. SNMP get amd put (write) are not currently supported.

If you manage ESXi with VirtualCenter you should be able to get performance data using SNMP from VirtualCenter.

I've managed to monitor a ESXi server in 2 ways...

Firstly depending on the hardware can do IPMI/SNMP monitoring...

Secondly I found a python script (not got the link here, but will post back when dug it out, although I have hacked it around to fit our needs) that effectively pulls the health status screen out of ESXi and chucks it in to zabbix...

Both methods seem to work ok.

          VMware Infrastructure Remote CLI

          Hi Jason or mdsuser,

I'm interested in this topic. I have an another suggestion.
Do you know VMware ESXi have provided function named "VMware Infrastructure Remote CLI"?

I think we may run "Remote CLI" as external script on ZABBIX server. But, I don't know its overload. Can you try?

I've got two ESXi servers with several windows hosts, jason, could you tell me where I can find this python script? Or a method on how to monitor the status of this server?

It's a dell poweredge 2950 server without any remote management cards, the esxi console itself (windows based one) is able to display my dell harwdare status. It would be awesome to get this to info to zabbix.

ESXi 3.5 (free version) - how to monitor

So what does it take to get 1.8 to actually do the IMPI polling? I see the pollers start in the logs, but it never sends any packets to the IMPI address. What is the magic to get it to poll an IMPI DRAC on a Dell server?
