If you are running Asterisk 1.4 or 1.6 you can use SNMP some guidance is here:

    or

If running 1.0 or 1.2 there is no SNMP support so you can get some ideas from here:

Asterisk monitoring: Now that you've built Asterisk around your entire life it might be a good idea to make sure it stays up! Heres how

Currently I am running Asterisk 1.2 but am in the middle of a migration to 1.4. Once I get further along with 1.4 I will setup a template for asterisk. Currently I really only monitor the number of concurent calls using a derivation of one of the scripts from the voip-info wiki.

I've been looking around for someone who has done this already for a project we are working on, but was unable to locate one that didn't use the CLI. I'm not a fan of automated tools accessing the Asterisk CLI for a variety of reasons, so I did what swaterhouse suggested.

I enabled SNMP monitoring and then I used the MIB to build a template for Asterisk. It seems to be working for me, but I needed to do things a little differently than what is detailed at Voxilla because Zabbix doesn't support SHA with AES.

Here is my how-to copy what I did. If you find problems with it, please let me know so I can correct it.
