Host for External Checks

I am unsure what host to use for external checks. The external checks will show active, but without the host being active, there is no way to view current data on them. When I set the host to active, all of the checks fail with the message:

Parameter [MiscExternalScript.pl[]] is not supported by agent on host [Misc Hostname] Old status [0]

Please disregard my post. I was under the impression that I could restart the zabbix server by using zabbix_server restart. Unfortunately this isn't the case, and my external scripts would not run.
