Remote Server & Device monitoring without installation zabbix agent.

    Dear Friends,

I am new for zabbix Technology. I am using nagios to monitor my Server, Network Switches & Routers.

Now,i would like to know that --- if i want to monitor my remote server's

    CPU Use
    Memory Use
    Swap Use
    Hard Disk Use
    Network Device In/Out graph.

then, is it necessary to install zabbix agent on all my servers? All my remote server having IBM Hardware with AIX 5x OS & i don't know if "zabbix agent" is available to install on AIX platform.

If it isn't possible, then please let me know how many items we can monitor of a remote server by using zabbix Server?

    Thanks,
    Nishith N.Vyas.

      Thanks.

Thanks for the direct link to download zabbix agent for AIX version 5x.

Now, also let me know how many services i can monitor without installing "zabbix agent" on my AIX Servers?

As zabbix is new for me, I can not compare it with nagios. But, i would like to know if you can give me the main advantages of zabbix,if i compare with

      zenoss
      centreon
      openNMS

      Thanks Again,

      Nishith Vyas

You can monitor lots of things with SNMP. No agent necessary.

Disclaimer: All of the above is pure speculation.

According to me, the problem is the same with all monitoring solutions such as Zenoss, centreon, opennms, etc...

There are differents types of checks : agentless, snmp, agent.

With only zabbix server, without any agent, you can control all what is visible when you're not logged in the server. For example the availability of a service on the network (ping, smtp, pop, http, mysql).

With the agent, you control all what need to be logged in the machine (running commands, processes, cpu load, disk usage, custom scripts).

The third solution, snmp, allows you to monitore both. But your servers have to run snmp. Then it depends on what is supported by snmp on your servers.

As far as the client is concerned, you can also donwload the sources and compile it, it's very quick and allow you to use the last version of zabbix. I've used this methods on several solaris servers whithout having any problem.

To conclude on the others solutions, I've tested ZenOSS, Centreon, OpsView and Zabbix to choose a new monitoring solution. I've choosen Zabbix, according to me it's really much more complete and powerfull than the others, and it remains simple and easy to use.

And for the advantages to use Zabbix instead of another one, some people have given their point of view (me too) in this thread :

            zabbix_agent on AIX.

            Hello,

As suggested,i have installed zabbix server properly. Now, i want to start the monitoring of my network connected devices which includes cisco switches, juniper firewall, database & AIX servers.

I tried my best to work throughout the ZABBIX GUI Interface. But, i didn't get proper way to configure below listed things for all my devices & servers.

            PING Status
            Packet Loss
            ssh,telnet service

So,i would like to know the documentation to configure each service with gui interface.

Another thing is :- i got "zabbix_plugin" for AIX, & after extracting it contains only 4 file shown below.

            -rwxr-xr-x 1 root system 350218 Jun 26 15:01 zabbix_agent
            -rwxr-xr-x 1 root system 424789 Jun 26 15:01 zabbix_agentd
            -rwxr-xr-x 1 root system 142294 Jun 26 15:01 zabbix_get
            -rwxr-xr-x 1 root system 153613 Jun 26 15:01 zabbix_sender

Now, kindly let me know how to installed "zabbix_agent" on my AIX PC?

              k shell in AIX.

I am using "K" Shell in AIX,which is very crucial to operate. So, configuring "zabbix agent" on AIX with k shell will be a problem for me.

Just let me know the steps, rest will be fine soon.

                enable snmp on AIX.

                Dear Friend,

Is it possible to enable SNMP on AIX

I have 3 IBM P-Series AIX Servers with enabled "SNMP" service by below giving documentation.

                open /etc/snmpd.conf

                community linuxguru 10.100.19.86 255.255.255.0 readWrite 1.17.2

                Save the file.

execute this command to enable /active snmp service.

                refresh -s snmpd

You will get below messgae if the command got success.
0513-095 The request for subsystem refresh was completed successfully.

Now,if the documentation is perfect, please let me know that

"How Many Services We Can Monitor By Enabling SNMP Serivce on AIX 5x"?

                Advanced Thanks,

Don't forget tu use the official documentation !
More than an half of my questions were solved reading the doc.

You can found it on this page :
                  http://www.zabbix.com/documentation.php

Download the PDF, 320 pages of documentation. Very complete, and very usefull.

                    Hi Nishith,

If you have snmp enabled on your servers (switches, router, firewall, etc.), and your Zabbix Server has been configured --with-net-snmp, you can try the following command:

                    snmpwalk -v2c -c linuxguru <ip_of_device_to_monitor>

you should get a lot of information (too much information).

If that works, you can then try something more specific like: snmpwalk -v2c -c linuxguru <ip_of_device_to_monitor> sysUptime

                    also try ifDescr, ifInOctets, ifOutOctets.

On the wiki template page you will find templates for Cisco, Juniper SSG, etc. You can use these templates, or you can use the OIDs that are in the item configs to create your own template.

To learn more about SNMP, there's a very good tutorial here: http://www.net-snmp.org/wiki/index.php/Tutorials

                    Hope that helps.
