Help modify a host's items from a template

I am having trouble modifying specific items from a template that is applied to a group of hosts. For example I want to monitor switch status for ports 1 -5, but only a few switches I want to monitor ports 1 and 4. Would I need to create templates for each "different" host?

    Hi,

You could simply disable Port 5 monitoring on the hosts that don't need it.

    OR

Make a new Template and copy the items that you want from the existing template to the new one.

If you're not sure how to do that, just ask.

      MrKen,

Thank you for the advice, sorry to sound naive, but I am new to this. How do you disable certain ports for monitoring of hosts within a template.

      Thanks.

        Hi saitoh,

Let's say that you have 1 template which you link to 10 hosts. On some of those hosts you don't want to monitor Port 5.

Go to configuration --> items. Select a host that doesn't need Port 5 monitoring. Two things you can do are: 1. Click on 'Active' in the Status column of the item to disable; or, 2. Click the little box on the left side for, say, InOctets Pt5, OutOctets Pt5, ifDescr Pt 5, etc., then at the bottom click on 'Disable selected'. Done.
You need to do that for each host.

If you need to do that to only a few hosts, then it won't take very long. But if you need to do that to a lot of hosts, then it might be quicker/easier to make a new template.

Go to configuration --> hosts. In the top right corner there's a drop down box, select Templates, then Create Template. All you need to do is give it a name then Save.
Next, go to configuration --> items. In the drop down box, select Templates, then choose your original template (the one that you already have). Now select all the items that you want to copy to your new template (little boxes on the left), then at the bottom click on 'Copy selected to ...', then click on the new Template that you just made.

Then you will need to link that template with the appropriate hosts. Conf -> hosts.

If the original template has triggers and/or graphs (check conf ->triggers) then you will probably need to copy them to your new template as well.

That should keep you busy for five minutes.

          MrKen,

Top, I just modified the certain ports for each host and it worked like a charm.

          Thanks for your help.
