The availablity of the Host is Not Available

    Hi

Can somebody tell me what could be the reason for the availablity of the server to be "NOT AVAILABLE". When the server is up and running...
We are able to ping the server.
    the error is :
    [B]Got empty string from [gva1054] IP [] Parameter [check_service[ftp]]
    [/B

can the zabbix server look up the name?
have you tried connecting via IP?
is the entire host not responding as far as zabbix is concerned or just this item?

some more information may help shine some light on your problem.

          Greetings,

Mary, can you post the configuration file, as it exists on GVA1054, minus the ListenIP of course. Also, please double check that you don't have any firewalling enabled on GVA1054. Right off the bat, I suspect that you have network issue here.

            Greetings,

Thanks for your suggestion. But there are no firewalls nor any network issue.
It is getting empty string from gva1054 ip[].
I have no idea to go any further. My implementation phase is stuck with this

            Regards
            Nancy

Okay. Based on the configuration file, it looks like your issue is with the security function.

In the configuration file you are showing, you are listening to all network connections on port 10050, however, the only zabbix server that your agent will answer to is at 127.0.0.1. So what is happening is that your zabbix server does get a connection to the Zabbix agent, the server then sends the request for information, but by that time, the agent has already closed the connection. Please set the Server entry in the configuration file to be the correct IP address of the Zabbix server, restart the agent and try again.

                  What james said.

just got your email mary, sorry for the delay in response.

but as mentioned above the first thing is to let the agent actually accept incoming connections from the server.

although I must admit that it's unusual to get the message you are getting here, normally when this situation occurs the host status simply reads "cannot connect to [host] [connection refused]"

lets see what happens when we actually allow them to talk though.

Hmmm, perhaps I was a bit unclear. The Agent is listening, and it is allowing connections from any source, however, once it recieves a connection, it processes the IP address of the source through the security check. If the source is not that of the entry(ies) listed on the Server line of the configuration file, it will immediatly close the connection.

                    This is what happens when you attempt to connection to an agent that is not listening on the IP that you are connecting to;
                    Code:
                    Trying 10.1.0.204...
telnet: connect to address 10.1.0.204: Connection refused
                    When this happens the sever will post the connection refused error, as you stated, however, what I suspect is happening to her is this;
                    Code:
                    Trying 10.1.0.204...
                    Connected to 10.1.0.204.
                    Escape character is '^]'.
                    Connection closed by foreign host.
In this case, you can see that we made a sucessful connection, but then the agent immediately killed the connection when we failed the security check.

No no no, I understood you. I was simply simplifying, of course the tcp connection is made; in the past though even though this is the case when the agent terminates the connection based on the security settings, zabbix still displayed "connection refused" (even though this came from the app layer, not tcp)

I was slightly off though.. it displays the more appropriate "connection reset by peer" message under normal circumstances as the screenshot below illustrates:

I was just bringing attention to the fact that the error she was getting seemed... unusual
