Support of SNMP parameters was not compiled in

    Hi there
Im trying to monitor a HP JetDirect printer using i template i found on the forum. However Zabbix says "Support of SNMP parameters was not compiled in" next to my items.

I have tried compiling with both --with-ucd-snmp and --with-net-snmp however neither of them change anything. It compiles without errors still. Im on Ubuntu Server.

Also having trouble finding the zabbix_server.log. I ran updatedb as root and then locate zabbix_server.log without results.

    Please advise!

    Where's the zabbix_server.log?
Look in zabbix_server.conf for this section:

    # Name of log file
    # If not set, syslog is used

    LogFile=/tmp/zabbix_server.log

SNMP not compiled in, check this post:

Ok, this is what zabbix_server spits out when starting. No SNMP errors here. Any ideas please?

SNMP support is enabled in zabbix_server. You should try snmwalk/snmpget to poll an SNMP-enabled device and then use the same parameters from zabbix.

Regarding " 23432:20090924:095810 Active parameter [perf_counter["\MSExchangeTransport SmtpSend(_total)\Messages Sent Total"]] is not supported by agent on host [dc1.*****.se] ", this has nothing to do with SNMP. That's a zabbix agent item that is unavailable (No MS Exchange on the monitored host ?).

Yes, i know that line doesn't matter i just pasted the entire log

Ive gotten a little further now however i still have problems. When i do a walk from my work PC to the target domain using iReasonings MIB Browser i can get data fine. When i do a snmpbulkwalk from the monitoring server it times out.

Ports 161 both TCP and UDP are forwarded to the printer from the outside. Get community public is enabled. Set community is disabled.

Zabbix server is on same external IP-range as my work PC. No firewall on Zabbix server, just closed down unnecessary services.

No firewall rules to deny the ip of the server in the router nor the printer itself.

Only thing i noticed is that if i do a full walk from my PC it will start to get data then time out because the uplink is too slow on remote side? Is this why i get a timeout error with host:161 in the host config? If so, can i stop Zabbix from walking the SNMP, and just force it to get the OIDs im asking it to get?

            Strange thread to follow!

            Just to recap the situation:

            - you now have snmp parameters compiled in
            - you have found your zabbix_server.log
            - you posted a snippet from the log and asked 'Any ideas?'
            - Calimero replied with a reasonable idea

So, as I look at the server log looking for any ideas, I see two things:

            1. Error for incorrect item information type, and
            2. 'Not supported by agent' errors - addressed by Calimero, above.

But what really intrigues me is that what is probably the most pertinent piece of information was edited out by you, here it is:

"I'm trying to run SNMP over agents in active mode and not directly from the server in case that makes any difference? Maybe my errors message actually means that the AGENTS dont have SNMP compiled in?"

            Why did you remove that?

You cannot use zabbix_agent items to monitor with snmp. But my guess is that you have figured that out already.

Disclaimer: All of the above is pure speculation.

That was edited out because thats not the case. I'm trying to connect to the device from the Zabbix server, and that doesnt work.

                SNMP is a bit sensitive/bitchy.

You should use snmpget and/or snmpwalk (if you're using net-snmp) from the zabbix server.

Your GUI tool on you PC will help you later to browse MIBs easily and find interesting MIBs but if you want to solve your problem, you'd better use the same tools as zabbix.

Once you have the right parameters on the command line (snmp version, passphrase or community, MIBs...) you can create items in zabbix.
