Sorry if this is an obvious question, but it's not clear from the docs if Zabbix can do "passive" monitoring. I don't mean "monitoring with active checks turned off". I mean when you monitor a host just with remote techniques like pinging or checking ports.
I see how you can use features like discovery or web monitoring, but it looks like you can't enter a host into the hosts screen or set up templates, triggers, alerts, etc. against it if there is no agent running on that box.
A lot of what I need is in the discovery screen, but the fact that I can't attach a name to the IP address, or impose any sort of structure on that display, makes it confusing to look at.
I know I'm not the first person to need this, I'm wondering how other people have handled it.
