Active Checks, Proxies, Remote hosts

Forgive me, but i still don't understand the whole process of Active agents and proxies. Could someone explain me this?

I have succesfully installed Zabbix server 1.6.5 (w postgres db) on ubuntu. My objective is to monitor some Windows Servers over the Internet. i am monitoring some local windows servers on my network and that goes fine... but when i have a remote network with multiple servers i don't know what to do.

My situation (explained very simple) is like this :

Zabbix Server --- WAN (The internet) --- Router -- Server 1, Server 2, Server 3

I have the zabbix client installed on Server 1, Server 2 and Server 3, but how do i add these servers on my zabbix server? As they all have the same WAN IP...

Ofcourse when i add the WAN IP as host in my zabbix server i will get : [WAN IP:10050] [CONNECTION REFUSED] Because the router doesnt have those ports open.

How do i solve this ? How can i accomplish a oneway communication. I want that Server 1 , 2 and 3 communicate with the server and that they pop-up in autodiscovery. Where do i install the Proxy? on my zabbix server? I think i am missing some information to understand the client / proxy process. Have read the manual quite some times about this subject but i can't seem to understand it.

I really hope someone can give me a little help with this.

1. normal or passive agent communication - connections are only made from server to the agent.
2. active agent communication - connections are only made from the agent to the server;
3. proxies - connections are only made from a proxy to the zabbix server.

so in your case you have two options :

1. if monitored machines can connect to the zabbix server, use active agents (configurable per item) on them;
2. use a proxy in the remote location. in this case, only proxy connects to the server. agents can be both passive and active. if passive, proxy server will poll them for data, if active, they will connect to the proxy.

Thank you for your reply Rich. I got it working with Active Agents the key was to match the exact name in the hosts list (not DNS name!) and change the monitoring items to Active (which i had all passive)
