    Is Zabbix a CMDB

Hello, Zabbix looks like a great solution to network and server monitoring. I'm wondering if it is also equipped to act as a configuration management db? I would love to be able to kill two birds with one stone by using Zabbix for both.

I've been tasked with documenting\inventory the server configuration for a network consisting of about 30 servers. I need to collect basic information that I'm sure Zabbix will take care of, but I also need to record passwords, applications in use, notes specific to each box. I then need to be able to produce a organized hard copy of the information. Can anyone tell me if Zabbix can do these things?

Thanks in advance for any input,
    Duke

    No, it's not.

No, unfortunatelly, it's not. A cmdb requires that the relationship between ICs to be mapped, that's something that zabbix doesn't do.

For instance, if you have a switch recorded in zabbix inventory, you should be able to define all the dependants ICs that are connected to this switch. For instance, if it fails, which servers will lost their connection to the LAN?

The inventory in zabbix are pretty complete (in terms of fields), but it lacks lot's of functionalities. For instance, zabbix doesn't have a way to export data. Another problem it the absense of reports and filters.

I really like zabbix, but it's inventory functionalities are poor. Basically they are a bunch of fields to store data...

      Hi.

Maybe you can however use that stored info in Zabbix inventory and build your own SQL queries to periodically transfer them to a 3rd party tool like Sugar CRM.

For the reports part, an alternative is integration with Jasper Reports
