Zabbix.comf settings and their relations to DB writes/reads

OK, obvisoulsy I need some basic education on Zabbix.
For example, httppollers=10 from server.conf is that 10 database connections into the database, or 10 zabbix_server processes to each client, or 10 connections per Client (has nothing to do with ps ax zabbix_server processes?), or 10 for all clients?

i think those might be zabbix_server poller processes that specifically do web monitoring, and in 1.6 that means each of them connects to the db, while in 1.8 they do not individually connect to the db.
but i might be wrong, so i'd suggest commenting at http://www.zabbix.com/documentation/.../zabbix_server - and asking to clarify what exactly each poller does
