What's the difference in an item vs. trigger

    First,

thanks for looking. I am new to zabbix, and reading through the manual, but it doesn't really say what the difference is between an "item" and a "trigger".

If one doesn't want to monitor say "IMAP" should i be disabling the item or trigger, or both?

Thank you for helping me understand the differences.

Disable the item. If the item is disabled then the trigger can't fire anyway. Or you can disable both - up to you.

Regarding items and triggers, see this post http://www.zabbix.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14404

      Thank you.

I found the wiki hidden around also, and this link explains a lot.
