temporarily disable notifications

I need a way to disable notifications for a certain amount of time.

I know I can define times when the notifications are not sent to a particular user, but I need to do it in a 'ad hoc' manner. Is there a way to do it in the current build?

while you can manually disable/enable notifications currently, 1.8 adds host maintenance support - that should allow to set time limited maintenance periods (feel free to test it out in current trunk )
